Founder story

I built Shard Tools after repeatedly needing quick file utilities and finding that many “free” tools required uploads, accounts, watermarks, or paid upgrades. I did not want private files or personal data collected, shared, or sold just to complete a simple task. Shard Tools brings everyday file utilities together in one place, with browser-local processing wherever possible. PDFs, images, CSVs, and other files can be handled directly on your device without unnecessary uploads. It is fast, private, and practical: no account required for common tools, no watermark, and no selling your data. Shard Tools is also rolling out MCP support, so users will be able to summon the right Shard Tools workflow from compatible LLMs and agents. The MCP server helps agents discover and open the correct browser-local tool; it does not need to receive the user’s file. The MCP layer runs through a Cloudflare Worker, while the actual file work happens in the user’s browser for supported tools. That architecture supports the privacy model: Shard Tools does not receive, upload, or store the user’s file bytes for browser-local workflows.

I built Shard Tools because I kept needing quick file utilities but didn’t love uploading private files to random sites. The tools run locally in your browser, so your files stay on your device. There’s also an MCP server, so agents can discover the right browser-local tool for a task and send you there without handling the file themselves.
