The first version of this playbook circulated in founder communities and drew more than 3,500 comments from founders who used it to plan launches. This 2026 edition expands the channel order, goals, and post-level tactics we see working for B2C and self-serve B2B products today.

Quick stats
Scalable vs. unscalable channels
When you start working on growth, split your time between two channel types. Unscalable channels (community launches, Product Hunt, press moments) help you hit revenue goals in the first 3–6 months. Scalable channels (paid social, SEO, referrals) usually take 3–6 months of iteration before they compound.
A practical split: run one serious platform launch per month while you figure out one scalable channel in parallel. Once scalable acquisition works, you can reduce dependence on launch-day spikes.
Case study: Martin ($200k to $1.3M ARR)
Martin launched on a different platform each month with 3–4 days of focused launch work per channel. That cadence alone reached roughly $200k ARR. In parallel, the team tested Meta Ads, iterating through hundreds of creatives over 3–4 months until paid social scaled. Ads then drove growth from ~$200k to $1.3M ARR over the following six months.
The lesson is not “Meta Ads always win.” It is that monthly unscalable launches fund the runway while you earn the right to invest in a scalable channel with real creative learning cycles.
Recommended launch order
Later channels benefit from social proof gathered earlier. This sequence is deliberate: learn on Reddit, build narrative on LinkedIn and X, convert intent on Product Hunt, go deep on Hacker News, then use press as proof for the next social wave.
| Order | Channel | Success benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 upvotes on a launch post | |
| 2 | 200k+ impressions on a launch post | |
| 3 | Twitter / X | 500k impressions; optimize for reposts |
| 4 | Product Hunt | Top 5 product of the day; hundreds of signups |
| 5 | Hacker News | 200+ upvotes; front page + active comment thread |
| 6 | PR and press | Social proof that amplifies social launches |
1. Reddit
Goal: 50 upvotes on a launch post
Reddit is your ICP lab. You will rarely get hundreds of paying customers from one post, but you can land your first 20–30 users and learn which subreddit actually cares.
General advice
- Post on different subreddits and watch which community responds. That signal is worth more than vanity upvotes.
- Read each subreddit rules before posting. Many ban self-promotion outright.
- Do not ask friends to upvote or comment. Reddit detects coordinated engagement from the same IP and bans accounts.
- Early upvote count alone does not determine virality. How mods and high-karma “OGs” react predicts how the rest of the subreddit will respond.
- Spend time in the community first. Match tone, inside jokes, and what gets ignored vs. celebrated.
The launch post
- Write a hook-driven title. On Reddit, the title is the headline.
- Add a video or at minimum product screenshots. Visual posts occupy more feed space.
- Target the subreddit’s power users implicitly: write for builders, not for “marketers launching a product.”
Examples to study
- AI Mac app launches in r/macapps
- Daily planner iOS apps in productivity subs
2. LinkedIn
Goal: 200k+ impressions on a launch post
LinkedIn converts when you sell to startups, founders, developers, or sales teams. Pure consumer products usually underperform here.
General advice
- One strong launch can drive 100–150 free trials and dozens of paying customers if your ICP matches the feed.
- The first sentence is your title. Its only job is to earn the “see more” click.
- Personal or career stories outperform feature lists.
- Tag people with a real reason: early users, investors, collaborators. Tag your company page in the main post.
- Reply to every comment after posting. Engagement velocity matters for distribution.
The launch post
- Always include video or images for extra feed real estate.
- Story format A: short, punchy one-liners stacked for mobile scanning.
- Story format B: 2–3 tight paragraphs written like a personal essay (harder, higher upside).
- Alternate format: short product description plus a polished launch video (Twitter-style, works on LinkedIn too).
Examples to study
- Mida (personal story format)
- Origami Agents (video-led launch post)
3. Twitter / X
Goal: 500k impressions; optimize for reposts
Twitter rewards reposts, not likes. You can go viral with under 1,000 followers if 100 of the right accounts repost you.
General advice
- Optimize for reposts. That is the metric that moves reach on X.
- Conversion rates are often similar to LinkedIn, sometimes slightly lower.
- Larger companies maintain lists of influential accounts who repost launches. Build relationships before you need them.
- Low-production “founder selfie” videos work on Reddit and HN more than on Twitter.
The launch post
- Pair copy with a well-made launch video whenever possible.
- Budget ~$5k for a video freelancer, or block a full week to edit in Premiere or iMovie yourself.
- High-polish video tends to outperform casual clips on this channel.
Examples to study
- Adam Cad launch threads
- Nox product announcement videos
4. Product Hunt
Goal: Top 5 product of the day; hundreds of signups
Product Hunt has unusually high conversion because visitors are actively looking for new tools. Many founders report it as their best single-day channel.
General advice
- You can only launch once every six months. Unlike LinkedIn or X, you cannot rerun the same playbook monthly.
- Top-five finishes often mean hundreds of signups for B2C products.
- Coordinate 5–10 teammates on a launch call. Message Slack groups, Discords, and LinkedIn connections together.
- Upvotes matter, but gallery creative drives organic view-to-upvote and click-through rates.
The launch post
- Lead with a strong first slide, usually video.
- Both high-production and authentic low-production videos can win. Match your brand, not a template.
- Treat the listing copy like a landing page above the fold: clear outcome, social proof, single CTA.
Examples to study
- tl;dv 2021 launch (all-time PH benchmark)
- Flow first launch (gold-standard launch video)
- Aqua Voice (different style, same category, also performed well)
5. Hacker News
Goal: 200+ upvotes; front page + active comment thread
A front-page Show HN can deliver hundreds of paying users. Launch here earlier than you think — right after Reddit, before you need heavy social proof.
General advice
- Your goal is a comment section that sparks real discussion. Reply all day, ask follow-ups, keep the thread alive.
- Expect criticism. The top comment is often negative. Respond calmly to win the silent majority reading along.
- The product does not need to be mature. Technical curiosity beats polish on HN.
The launch post
- Go deep on technical details. Long, honest write-ups work here when they fail everywhere else.
- Link a plain YouTube demo if helpful. No cinematic launch video required.
- Avoid marketing language entirely. Write like an engineer explaining what you built and why.
Examples to study
- Aqua Voice (AI transcription)
- Phase Biolabs (hard-tech / deep tech)
- Proofshot (AI coding agent)
6. PR and press
Goal: Social proof that amplifies social launches
TechCrunch alone rarely moves the revenue needle. Press works when you reuse coverage as proof in LinkedIn, X, and Product Hunt posts.
General advice
- Do not treat traditional press as a standalone distribution channel.
- Screenshot or link articles in social launch posts. The badge matters more than direct referral traffic.
- Warm intros beat cold email. Ask founders who were covered to forward a short blurb.
- Research individual reporters on TechCrunch and similar outlets. Pitch one exclusive at a time.
- Follow up once, then move on. Journalists are inundated; respect their time.
The launch post
- Attach the headline screenshot as the hero image on LinkedIn when announcing coverage.
- Pair funding or milestone news with a founder story, not a press release tone.
- Use coverage in PH maker comments and launch emails for credibility, not as the only CTA.
Examples to study
- Funding announcements repurposed as LinkedIn launch posts
- Nowadays-style coverage turned into high-impression social posts
After launch week
One spike is not a GTM strategy. List on founder directories, syndicate to newsletters, and capture SEO from comparison pages so discovery compounds after the launch thread goes quiet.
