About
OpenFile is a free and open source (MIT) toolkit with 360+ file tools for PDF, images, video, audio, 3D, fonts, archives, eBooks, data and code. Every tool runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly, so your files are never uploaded. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no file limit. You can install it as an app that works offline, or use the desktop and Android builds. Local AI tools run on your own device. I built it because I was tired of upload-only converter sites.
Key Features
- Merge, split, compress, sign and protect PDFs, with drag-and-drop page ordering
- Convert between PDF, Word, Markdown, HTML and image formats in bulk
- Compress, resize, crop and convert images, and remove backgrounds with on-device AI
- Trim, compress and convert video, record the screen with webcam and mic, and make GIFs
- Transcribe audio, and format, validate or hash code, JSON, JWT and regex in the browser
- Scrub metadata and redact personal data from files before sharing them
Use Cases
- Merge several PDFs into one ordered document, then compress it before emailing
- Remove a photo's background and resize it to a social media preset without uploading it
- Generate a GST or VAT invoice with automatic totals and export it as a PDF
From the founder
Who it's for
“Anyone who converts, edits, or inspects files on a daily basis without trusting third-party upload sites: office workers, students, designers, video and audio editors, developers, and privacy-minded users who need PDF, image, video, audio, archive, eBook, font, 3D, data and code tools on the desktop or in a browser, and who want them to run locally with no sign-up, no watermark and no file limit.”
Why I built it
“Aniruddha Adak, a developer from India who builds open source tools and AI agents. I built OpenFile because I was tired of upload-only converter sites. Every tool runs client-side in your browser tab via WebAssembly (or on the desktop and Android builds), so files are never uploaded. Local AI tools run on your own device. It is free and open source under the MIT license.”
Who it is for
- Privacy-conscious people who need to process sensitive documents without uploading them to a cloud service.
- Freelancers and small business owners creating invoices, signing PDFs and converting office documents.
- Students and educators making flashcards, quizzes, worksheets and citations.
