Use the newsletter sponsorship calculator

This free calculator runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and no account or email is required. Enter:

  • Sponsorship cost — What the newsletter charges for this ad slot.
  • Subscribers — Active recipients for the issue you are buying — not the all-time list.
  • Open rate — Typical open rate for that newsletter. Ask for recent issues, not a best month.
  • CTR on opens — Clicks divided by opens. If they quote CTR on the full send, convert it first.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter your numbers

Fill in sponsorship cost, subscribers, open rate and ctr on opens. Nothing is sent anywhere — the maths runs in your browser.

  2. 2

    Press calculate sponsorship rates

One button. Change any input afterwards and the answer updates as you type.

  3. 3

    Read the result

You get effective cpm (opens), plus effective cpc, estimated opens, estimated clicks.

How newsletter sponsorship CPM is calculated

Effective CPM is what you pay per 1,000 opens: sponsorship cost divided by estimated opens, times 1,000. A $2,500 slot on 40,000 subscribers at a 40% open rate is 16,000 opens and about $156 CPM.

Always price against opens, not against the full list. A 100k-subscriber newsletter with a 15% open rate delivers fewer opens than a 40k list at 45% — and the smaller list is often the better buy.

More on newsletter ads

Cost per click matters as much as CPM

CPC is sponsorship cost divided by estimated clicks. Opens times CTR on opens gives the click estimate. At 16,000 opens and a 2% CTR you get 320 clicks, or about $7.80 each on a $2,500 buy.

Compare CPC across quotes. Two newsletters with similar CPM can diverge wildly on clicks if one has a lazy primary CTA and the other puts your offer above the fold.

What good newsletter advertising rates look like

Niche B2B lists often clear $40–$100 CPM on opens when the audience is exact. Broad consumer lists should be cheaper. Above about $100 CPM you need either an unusually qualified list or a creative that converts unusually well.

Treat publisher-reported open rates cautiously. Ask for the last three issues, and prefer unique opens over total opens when both are offered.

From rate card to unit economics

This calculator answers whether the quote is priced fairly. It does not tell you whether customers from the placement are profitable — that needs attributed customers, LTV and payback on the sponsorship CAC:LTV tool.

A fair CPM with a terrible landing page still fails. Use both tools: rate maths before you buy, unit economics after the send.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Uses the open rate and CTR you enter. If the publisher only shares vanity “unique open” numbers or omits bot opens, CPM will look better than the slot performs.
  • CTR is measured on opens here. Some rate cards quote CTR on the full send — that understates click efficiency and makes CPC look worse.
  • Media maths do not replace attribution. After the send, use the sponsorship CAC:LTV calculator with real customers to decide whether to renew.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate newsletter sponsorship CPM?
Divide the sponsorship cost by estimated opens, then multiply by 1,000. Opens are subscribers times open rate. $2,500 ÷ 16,000 opens × 1,000 ≈ $156 CPM.
Should CPM use subscribers or opens?
Opens. Pricing against the full list hides weak open rates and makes expensive slots look cheap. Ask for recent open rates before you compare quotes.
What is a good CTR for newsletter advertising?
On opens, 1–3% is common for a primary sponsorship. Above 3% is strong. If the publisher quotes CTR on the full send, convert it to opens first so you can compare apples to apples.
How is newsletter sponsorship different from newsletter advertising?
People use both phrases for the same buy — a paid slot in an email issue. This calculator covers that placement whether the rate card says sponsorship or advertising.
Is this newsletter sponsorship calculator free?
Yes — free, no account, and it runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
