FAQ
Are AI detectors accurate enough to trust?
They are accurate enough to flag work worth a closer look, not accurate enough to prove cheating. In our August 2026 rounds, ZeroGPT correctly flagged both fully AI-written essays before its scanner started erroring, and Pangram caught a paraphrased AI essay but falsely flagged all three human-written essays as 100% AI, including one written in an English-learner style. Our best overall pick for teachers, Originality.ai, is ranked on official documentation and third-party reviews, not hands-on testing. Always verify with drafts and a second tool.
Can an AI detector falsely flag real student work?
Yes. In our own August 2026 test, Pangram labeled all three human-written essays 100% AI-generated, including the English-learner sample. Independent research, including a 2023 Stanford-led study published in Patterns, found that detectors flagged non-native English writing far more often. Check drafts and revision history before acting.
Is Turnitin the same as the detectors reviewed here?
No. Turnitin is sold to institutions, not individual teachers, and its AI score sits inside a plagiarism report. The tools on this page are standalone detectors a teacher can buy or use for free today. We compare the two approaches on our Turnitin accuracy page.
Is there a free AI detector for teachers?
Yes. ZeroGPT scanned with no account before its scanner started erroring, Pangram's free account covers roughly four essays a day, and GPTZero's official free plan allows 10,000 words per month. Free tiers work for spot checks, not for a full semester of grading.
Will students know their work was scanned?
Not automatically. Standalone detectors do not notify students, and most teachers keep scans private unless a flag needs a conversation. Check your district policy first; some schools require disclosure before student work is submitted to third-party tools.
